The Longevity of the Checkers Board Game


It would be fairly impossible to live anywhere in the world under any cultural influence and not be familiar with the checkers board game. Along with chess and backgammon, the checkers board game is easily the most recognizable strategy game in history. Keep in mind the word ‘history’ does not refer to the last hundred years. Checkers has been around a lot longer than that!

The oldest example of the game of checkers was discovered at an archaeological dig site in Iraq. The game that was unearthed was close to 3,000 years old. Later, a similar game was discovered in Egypt and the age of the unearthed game appeared to be 1,500 years old. It is believed that these games were later modified by the French to be played on a chess board during the middle ages and this is where the “modern” version of the checkers board game was born.
